Ahmad ibn Rustah Isfahani, better known as Ibn Rusta was a 10th-century Persian explorer and geographer born in Rosta district, Isfahan, Persia. He wrote a geographical compendium known as Book of Precious Records, based on first hand accounts and his own travels. His information on the non-Islamic peoples of Europe and Inner Asia makes him a useful source for these obscure regions and for the prehistory of the Turks and other steppe peoples. This is a direct quote from Ibn Rusta, written between 903 and 913. Music:- Wrong Turn 🤍 Kevin MacLeod - Rites 🤍 History Time is now a podcast. You can find us on iTunes. This combined rail-road bridge is located in the Kerch Strait, the strait that connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The Crimean Bridge, therefore, connects the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea and the Taman Peninsula of Russia's Krasnodar Krai, which is, as you might guess, a very important geostrategic point. The scope of the project included the construction of two parallel bridges: a 16.9 km long road bridge and an 18.1 km long railway bridge. The announcement that Russia will build a road-railway bridge over the sea was given by Vladimir Putin on March 19th, 2014, just a day after the infamous referendum on which Crimean citizens voted to fall under Russia. After fast and efficient construction, on 15th May 2018, Vladimir Putin led a convoy of trucks across the bridge, driving one himself, in an inauguration ceremony. Of course, the construction and opening of the Crimean Bridge caused a sharply negative reaction from Ukraine, which considers this construction illegal. In addition, the United States and the European Union also condemned the construction and opening of the bridge and imposed sanctions on the companies involved in its construction. What do you think about this controversial bridge - tell us in the comments below! In this presentation, Johannes Preiser-Kapeller provides an overview of the relations between the Roman/Byzantine Empire and the Steppes within the framework of the general dynamics in the Eurasian steppe region in the 8th to 9th centuries CE, including religious conversion among the Uyghurs, Khazars and Bulgars. The Khazars were a semi-nomadic Turkic people with a confederation of Turkic tribes that in the late 6th century CE established a major commercial empire covering the southeastern section of modern European Russia, southern Ukraine, Crimea and Kazakhstan. The Caspian Sea is still called the Khazar Sea in some local languages such as Azerbaijani or Crimean Tatar . The Khazars created what for its duration was the most powerful polity to emerge from the break-up of the Western Turkic Khaganate. Astride a major artery of commerce between Eastern Europe and Southwestern Asia, Khazaria became one of the foremost trading empires of the medieval world, commanding the western marches of the Silk Road and playing a key commercial role as a crossroad between China, the Middle East and Kievan Rus'. For some three centuries the Khazars dominated the vast area extending from the Volga-Don steppes to the eastern Crimea and the northern Caucasus. Khazaria long served as a buffer state between the Byzantine Empire and both the nomads of the northern steppes and the Umayyad Caliphate and Abbasid Caliphate, after serving as the Byzantine Empire's proxy against the Sasanian Empire. The alliance was dropped around 900. Byzantium began to encourage the Alans to attack Khazaria and to weaken its hold on Crimea and the Caucasus and sought to obtain an entente with the rising Rus' power to the north, which it aspired to convert to Christianity. Between 965 and 969, the Kievan Rus' ruler, Sviatoslav I of Kiev, as well as his allies, conquered the capital, Atil, and ended Khazaria's independence. The state became the autonomous entity of Rus' and then of Khazar former provinces in Volga Bulgaria.

When linguists, in the 21st century, tried to identify which Turkic subfamily the language of the Khazars belongs to, they constantly faced one scientific problem that cannot be solved in the manner they followed. This problem starts from the wrong guess that the "cognate" of the Khazar language, as some of the linguists believe, is Chuvash. And this guess is what has made the scholars get stuck, though the solution of the problem is much simpler than can be even imagined. It lies not in searching for the Khazar language's proper "cognate", but in properly identifying, from the very beginning, as in every such research, its language family. Brief overview of the 10th-century correspondence between King Joseph of Khazaria and Hasdai ibn Shaprut of Muslim Spain. Widely considered a medieval forgery, the correspondence nevertheless sheds much light on how the story of the Khazar conversion to Judaism spread over the centuries. The truth of the damning charges made against this great race. They invented the alphabet and modern navigation and introduced wine to Europe. But after the sacking of Carthage by the Romans in 146 BC and the destruction of their famous library, the world was left with very little evidence of Phoenician life and culture. The Greeks and Romans describe them as a race of unscrupulous profiteers, grubby merchants – and worse. They were seen as a morally corrupt race who forcibly prostituted their daughters in sacred rituals and killed their own young in an attempt to win over their violent gods. The Khazars created what for its duration was the most powerful polity to emerge from the break-up of the Western Turkic Khaganate. For some three centuries (c. 650–965) the Khazars dominated the vast area extending from the Volga-Don steppes to the eastern Crimea and the northern Caucasus.Khazaria long served as a buffer state between the Byzantine Empire and both the nomads of the northern steppes and the Umayyad Caliphate, after serving as Byzantium's proxy against the Sasanian Persian empire. The alliance was dropped around 900. Byzantium began to encourage the Alans to attack Khazaria and weaken its hold on Crimea and the Caucasus, while seeking to obtain an entente with the rising Rus' power to the north, which it aspired to convert to Christianity. Between 965 and 969, the Kievan Rus' ruler Sviatoslav I of Kiev conquered the capital Atil and destroyed the Khazar state. Determining the origins and nature of the Khazars is closely bound with theories of their languages, but it is a matter of intricate difficulty since no indigenous records in the Khazar language survive, and the state was polyglot and polyethnic. The native religion of the Khazars is thought to have been Tengrism, like that of the North Caucasian Huns and other Turkic peoples. The polyethnic populace of the Khazar Khaganate appears to have been a multiconfessional mosaic of pagan, Tengrist, Jewish, Christian and Muslim worshippers. The ruling elite of the Khazars was said by Judah Halevi and Abraham ibn Daud to have converted to Rabbinic Judaism in the 8th century, but the scope of the conversion within the Khazar Khanate remains uncertain. Proposals of Khazar origins have been made regarding the Bukharan Jews, the Muslim Kumyks, Kazakhs, the Cossacks of the Don region, the Turkic-speaking Krymchaks and their Crimean neighbours the Karaites to the Moldavian Csángós, the Mountain Jews, Subbotniks and others. In the late 19th century, a theory emerged that the core of today's Ashkenazi Jews descended from a hypothetical Khazarian Jewish diaspora who had migrated westward from modern Russia and Ukraine into modern France and Germany. This theory still finds occasional support, but most scholars view it with scepticism. The theory is sometimes associated with antisemitism and anti-Zionism.
