Medieval Europe смотреть последние обновления за сегодня на .
Our European history is going to start around 1500 with the Renaissance, but believe it or not, that is not the actual beginning of history in the continent. So, today, we're going to teach you the broad outlines of the so-called Middle Ages, and look at events like the Black Plague, the Hundred Years War, and the Western Schism of the Catholic Church that set the stage for the history of modern Europe. This mega-compilation documentary gathers together all my videos thus far about the Early Middle Ages set together in chronological order. 19th century historians referred to the early medieval era as “the Dark Ages.” Today, historians reject that term. The period after the fall of the western Roman Empire was indeed an era of strife, fierce battles and conquering kings, but it was also an era of growth, artistic achievement, and the rise of new civilizations. This is the Early Middle Ages, roughly, from the sixth century to the start of the eleventh century. It was the era of the early Rashidun conquests, of Charles Martel and the ascent of the great empire of Charlemagne. It was the period of the harrowing Viking invasions, of Alfred the Great and the Anglo-Saxons of England, and the rise of the Normans. Why were the Middle Ages dark? Often associated with superstition and witch-hunting, burning pyres and plague doctors, the middle ages were a traumatic, violent period in human history. John Green teaches you about the so-called Dark Ages, which it turns out weren't as uniformly dark as you may have been led to believe. While Europe was indeed having some issues, many other parts of the world were thriving and relatively enlightened. John covers European Feudalism, the cultural blossoming of the Islamic world, and the scientific and artistic advances in China, all during these "Dark Ages." Along the way, John will raise questions about the validity of Europe's status as a continent, reveal the best and worst years of his life, and frankly state that science and religion were once able to coexist. Have you ever been curious about Medieval life? Would you travel back in time if you could? Do you think you would enjoy it? How long would you last? Hear ye, hear ye! The Middle Ages sucked! After 200 years of peace and prosperity under 'Pax Romana,' the Roman Empire fell into crisis and decline. Thus began the Middle Ages, more commonly known as the Dark Ages; beginning towards the end of the 5th century and lasting until the start of the Renaissance in the 14th century. The majority of people in the middle ages, a silent, suffering majority, had to do service and pay taxes to the ruling noblemen and were repeatedly exposed to famine and violent conflicts. At the same time, fear of bears, wolves and bands of robbers were widespread...Today, folktales and legends still give us an insight into the former peasant culture. How did people live and die during the harshest months of the year? How did they stay warm? What did they eat? How did they keep themselves entertained in an age before modern day luxuries like electric blankets, double glazing, and Netflix? The onset of the Little Ice Age, between 1300 until about 1870 meant that the long, dark winters of the Late Middle Ages were colder and more dangerous. With starvation and death from illness always threatening to strike, winter was a frightening time. Despite what pop culture might have you believe, living in a medieval castle wasn't all that glamorous. If you were one of the lucky ruling class, you got some wine or the occasional hot bath. But with the lack of plumbing, castles smelled pretty ripe. Not to mention rats. So many rats. Today we're getting real about what living in a medieval castle was like, and it's not that pretty. #medievalcastles #middleages #history
Charlemagne was king of the Franks, and emperor of western Christendom. Out of the turmoil of the Early Middle Ages, he united the bulk of western and central Europe, and laid the groundwork for the modern European world. He was a patron of the arts and education, instigator of the flowering of learning known as the Carolingian Renaissance. He was also a fierce conqueror, who fought to impose his rule on the Saxons. He faced defeats as well as victories, losing the rearguard of his army at the famous Battle of Roncesvalles, where he suffered a personal tragedy as well, losing his friend and companion-in-arms, Roland. The disease known as the plague has been stalking humanity for over 5,000 years, and there have been many outbreaks. In fact, there have been three pandemics caused by the bacillus bacterium Yersinia Pestis. The first was in the 6th century. It devastated the Byzantine Empire and was known as The Plague of Justinian. The third began in China in the mid-19th century and quickly spread throughout the world. But it is the plague that began in 1346 which killed more than 50 million people in just seven years that we refer to as the ‘Black Death’. The Middle Ages was a time of superstition, religious fanaticism and ignorance and so they thought it was the end of the world. In reality it was the largest pandemic in the history of humanity. 0:00 Introduction 1:13 How did it spread? 2:33 Where did it start? 5:30 What were the symptoms? 8:17 Italy – Europe’s Front Line 12:40 Anarchy 18:37 The Wrath of God? 20:59 The Blame Game 24:06 Massacre 26:39 A Corruption of the Air 31:48 The End of Feudalism 🎶🎶 Music by CO.AG: 🤍 Narrated by James Wade Edited by James Wade & Adam Longster Thank you for watching. Imbued with mystery and grandeur, the fortified castles testify to medieval civilization and cover a complex reality. By traveling from castle to castle, from the borders of Spain to the mountains of Switzerland, from the Scottish moors to the banks of the Dordogne, and thanks to 3D models, this film retraces a thousand years of medieval military construction... Construction methods and siege techniques will constantly evolve, in a frantic race for optimal effectiveness against invaders. In the 11th century, the first castles appear that can be described as "forts", impregnable with their ramparts and their corner towers. But this military building is also the residence of authority, of the lord. It became the symbol of feudalism in full development... From the 14th century, the fortified castles lost their importance in front of the efficiency of the artillery which now broke all the walls and the military architects adapted the shape of the castles to thwart the new siege techniques. The 16th and 17th centuries mark the end of fortified castles. The art of war evolved along with social structures. Now fortified cities and numerous armies are more effective in defending the kingdom. The castles gradually became the residence of lords whose authority gave way to that of the King. They are transformed into luxurious residences. The castle then no longer has anything “strong”. Director: Serge TIGNÈRES & Benoît POISSON

Although cleanliness in the Middle Ages was primitive compared to what modern people enjoy, it doesn't mean medieval hygiene didn't exist. Despite living in an era long before indoor plumbing, shampoo, and nail salons, people used the best hygiene practices they could. Unfortunately, they didn't have a lot to work with. Peasants had it especially bad and weren't often able to afford luxuries like more than one set of clothing. For the lower classes, personal hygiene in the Middle Ages meant keeping clean however you could, even if it wasn't easy. #medieval #peasanthygiene #weirdhistory

What was medieval junk food like? If you're picturing knights eating Big Macs and Twinkies, you're not far off from the truth. Just substitute a meat pie for the Big Mac and a funnel cake for the Twinkies, and you'll have a good idea of what medieval people bought on the street. But knights didn't ride their horses to medieval drive-throughs. Instead, medieval junk food usually catered to the poorest people and travelers. #JunkFood #MedievalEra #WeirdHistory
What was daily life like for a king or queen during the Middle Ages? Contrary to what you might imagine, it didn't involve lounging in robes of silk and satin and indulging in lots of feasting. In reality, the life of medieval royals involved a lot of incest, sickness, and cold castles. You'll probably feel better about your own situation after learning what life for royalty in medieval times was like. Women were married off to very close relatives for diplomatic purposes; on many occasions, they were only in their early teens at the time. Sadly, the death rates for mothers and children were quite high, and the general lack of hygiene most definitely didn't help. #modernlife #MedievalEra #weirdhistory
The history of Europe covers the peoples inhabiting Europe from prehistory to the present. The period known as classical antiquity began with the emergence of the city-states of ancient Greece. Later, the Roman Empire came to dominate the entire Mediterranean basin. The fall of the Roman Empire in AD 476 traditionally marks the start of the Middle Ages. Beginning in the 14th century a Renaissance of knowledge challenged traditional doctrines in science and theology. Simultaneously, the Protestant Reformation set up Protestant churches primarily in Germany, Scandinavia and England. After 1800, the Industrial Revolution brought prosperity to Britain and Western Europe. The main powers set up colonies in most of the Americas and Africa, and parts of Asia. In the 20th century, World War I and World War II resulted in massive numbers of deaths.
