Mnweni Drakensberg смотреть последние обновления за сегодня на .
On 17th March 2022, we explored the Mnweni area of the Northern Drakensberg. Mnweni is arguably the most scenic and dramatic area in the Ukahlamba-Drakensberg. This was a 4-day hike where we started from the Mnweni Cultural Centre and made our way up Mnweni Pass, to Ledgers cave and down Rockeries Pass.
Watch in 4K (or at least HD), and subscribe if you enjoy! The Mnweni region of the Drakensberg is vast, remote, and breathtakingly dramatic, with some of the most unique and impressive mountains found anywhere in South Africa (and probably the world). Last month, I got the chance to explore this incredible place with Simon, Aidan, Amy and my dad. We spent the first day hiking to Mbundini 1 cave, and then headed up Fangs Pass to the summit the next. After spending the second night split between tents and Rat Hole Cave, we traversed across to Ledgers Cave, and then made our way down Rockeries Pass on the final day. This is without a doubt the most majestic place in which I've hiked - the sunrises we woke up to were quite unlike anything I'd seen before, and the sheer scale of everything was really humbling. Hiking in Mnweni involves very long distances, and intense elevation gains. The altitude on the summit means that oxygen is in shorter supply, and so this adds to the challenge. Temperatures at night drop well below freezing, and water spots are often frozen in Winter, and so these hikes should not be attempted without a good deal of experience in the Drakensberg, and a solid level of fitness. Nonetheless, it's an unforgettable experience, and definitely one to aim towards! Feel free to contact me if you'd like more info about hiking in the area, and what things you'll need to be aware of. Watch in 4K, and subscribe if you enjoy! After an incredible first hike in Mnweni a few months earlier, I got the chance to return to this breathtaking region of the Drakensberg in September, this time with Gabriel, Simeon, Allen, Amy and my dad. After spending the first night in the valley next to Shepard's Cave, we made our way up Mnweni Pass, and tented near Mponjwane Cave. We then hiked across the escarpment to Easter Cave, were we spent our third night, and then followed Ntonjelane Pass back to our cars. Hiking in Spring meant warmer conditions than we'd had on our last trip, and we spent some time at a fantastic swimming spot over lunchtime on the first day. In the lower parts of the Berg, the Greyia's were magnificent in full bloom, and are unique to the Drakensberg. From the first evening all the way until the third afternoon, we had to contend with some pretty extreme winds, but on the last morning, we woke up to a surreal sunrise above a blanket of clouds, and I could capture for some footage with my drone. Music by Lord Huron and Simeon Goddard The soundtrack from 5:58 onwards is the work of Simeon himself! He's a highly talented composer, and I strongly recommend exploring more of his music. An awesome hike from Mnweni Cultural Hiking Centre, up Mnweni Pass, a night in Ledger's Cave and down Rockeries Pass
3 day hike in the Drakensberg mountains. The hike covers 46km over 3 days. Rated as one of the most scenic hikes in the Drakensberg. A challenging hike that needs a good level of fitness. The Mnweni Hike is situated in the northern Drakensberg and is accessible through the closest town of Bergville. The hike starts and ends at the Mnweni cultural center. The route up is either via Rockeries or Mnweni Pass. The highlight is an overnight in Ledgars cave.
In this video I tell you everything I know about the Mnweni Pass / Rockeries Pass route in the Drakensberg mountains in South Africa. Please make sure that you do additional research if you are planning on backpacking or running this route, and find out what the current conditions are as things in the mountains can change drastically over time. We set out for a 4 day adventure from the Mnnweni Cultural centre in the Drakensberg mountains in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa in early October. With an elevation gain of 2,602m over 52km the hike would be rated 7/10 and is recommended for an experienced group unless you with a guide who knows the area. We got hit with rain, fog, wind and got stuck in a thunder storm while hiking out on the last day. Water was sparse and had to be looked for, slogged for miles and preserved. We stayed in tents that we carried and caves on the escarpment of the Drakensberg mountain range. 0:00 Day 1: Mnweni Cultural Centre to the base of Mnweni Pass where we tented. 2:28 Day 2: Up Mnweni Pass into Lesotho for water & up to a Cave near rockeries pass. 4:46 Day 3: Rockeries pass across to a cave close to Ntonjelana Pass. 6:38 Day 4: Down Ntonjelana Pass, getting stuck in a lightning storm and finally hitching a ride from a local back to Mnweni Cultural centre.
This was my first time hiking the Berg. It was mid December and we nearly froze sleeping in the cave on the second evening. Never underestimate the Berg. Darren rated this hike as a 7 out 10 compared to other hikes in the Berg. We are planning the next one. Thanks for watching.

Some friends and I went on a three day hike in Mnweni, located in the Drakensberg Mountains. These mountains are found in South Africa & Lesotho forming a natural boarder between the two countries. Part of our hike was in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province of South Africa and the portions on the highest points were in Lesotho. Day 2 Correction: We actually camped at around 2800m elevation and not 3100m as mentioned in the video. The highest peaks in the area do reach elevations higher than 3000m though. I hope this makes you want to go on adventure... Everything on this video was shot on my phone and I managed to compile the footage into this vlog. Gear: Huawei P30 Pro, my old hiking boots & a whole lotta good vibes 😎
The Average Runners taking on the Mnweni Mountain Marathon Trail Run, in the Drakensberg. Amazing Trails and incredible views! Mnweni has some easy running, technical climbs, steep downhills but so worth it. Definitely a trail running race to do! #Mnweni #MnweniMarathon #MountainMarathonSeries #KZNTrailRunning #Drakensberg #TrailRunning
This is a 4k video that will look great on your large TV at this resolution. At the very beginning of November 2022, we hiked two passes in the Mnweni Area of the Drakensberg Mountains. We went up Iffidi Pass and down Fangs Pass. We slept in the Cycad cave on the first night, then in true Ifidi cave the second night, and in Fangs cave the last night. We hired a guide, Bafana, from the Mnweni Cultural and Hiking Center. Bafana arranged for for a porter, Christopher, for our friend. The longest part of the video (thumb nail image) in the Ifidi pass is around the place where me and Bafana had to turn around in January of 2022 because there were too much water and too slippery. This was a glorious hike as is every hike in Drakensberg and especially Mnweni Area. Finding Ifidi and Fangs caves was a challenge. I used coordinates provided on 🤍 pages to find the caves. For Ifidi it's supper important to take the right elevation when turning left. The Fangs Cave is well hidden or tucked in and it was really cloudy and misty.
In May, 2022 We went to the Mnweni area of the Drakensberg mountain range. We took Mnweni Pass up and wend down the Rockeries pass. It is yet again the most beautiful and dramatic area of Drakensberg I've visited. We hired a guide, Bafana, and a porter so it was an easy hike.
The Mnweni Valley, is one of the most rugged, beautiful and unspoilt regions of the South African Drakensberg Mountain. It is found in the Northern Drakensberg area of KwaZulu-Natal.
Mnweni must be one of the more stunning parts of an already incredible mountain range in South Africa. Certainly worth a hike.

A 6km walk into the Mnweni valley leads to beautiful marble pools, deeper than I could stand. we wild camped there for the weekend and enjoyed the ample birdlife and beautiful views. The water is drinkable and refreshing for swimming.

We hiked in to the Cycad Cave from the Mnweni Cultural and Hiking Center (MCC) on the afternoon of Friday, January 14.On January 15 we went up one of the most beautiful mountain rivers I've ever been to - - Ifidi River. From the Cycad cave we still had a few kilometers to cover the approach before the bottom of the pass. The approach wasn't particularly technical but those steep grassy no-trail slopes were killing my ankles going up and down. We got over several scrambling obstacles and made it far up the chimney at the top only to get stopped by a small super slippery boulder and waterfall in the middle of it. It was raining really hard and we figured that a 4 meter-wide chimney can flash flood pretty easily and fast. So we didn't tempt fate by trying to figure out how to make the boulder less slippery and turned around. The path down wasn’t too bad until my knees started to feel the toll of going up and down Ifidi in one day. Eventually, we had to start crossing the streams and rivers that didn’t pose any difficulty on the way up but now were overflowing with a lot of new extra rainwater. I don’t know what I would have done without Bafana at a couple of those crossings. It was a bit disappointing not to summit Ifidi Pass. Knowing that going down Icidi Pass would've been even sketchier I'm glad we didn't push too much and got out of the chimney when we did and didn't look for any additional adventures besides crossing now over flowing streams and rivers. I plan to come back for seconds later in 2022.
An extreme hike in the beautiful Drakansburg Mountains of South Africa. The hike is 4 days and about 48km with almost 2km elevation. Read more on my Blog about this amazing experience: 🤍

We at Drakensberghiker love to stay at the Mnweni hiking and cultural center before and after our hiking trips in the stunning Drakensberg mountains.
The third video in a series photographing the Drakensberg Escarpment of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. On our third day we hike through the hills of Lesotho to the sensational Mnweni Pinnacles. I guided this trip for five photography friends, all of whom are independent photographers and hikers so I was able to find time to talk to camera. I regularly run workshops in the Drakensberg for adventurous photographers. If you are interested in joining next year then follow this link: 🤍
Amphitheatre to Mnweni is a slightly shorter version of the famous Drakensberg Northern traverse. 5 days of incredible mountain views.
Heading to the summit of Island peak in the Himalayas. One of the challenges is getting across the various crevasses that open up. These change daily and the ice doctors need to constantly change the ladders. The next challenge would be the 400m ice wall that needs to be climbed. Our Island peak adventure includes a trek into Everest bae camp to help with the acclimatisation.
I was invited to join an organised hike up to Mnweni on the weekend 29/30 January 2022. We met and left our cars at the Mnweni Cultural Centre on the Saturday morning and a local resident with a bakkie provided us with a lift 5km up the Thonyelana River valley for the start of the Rockeries pass route to the top of Mnweni. The walk is a 14km to the top climbing 1700m from 1200m to 2900m altitude. It is a solid 8 hour walk to the top and you need a good level of fitness. We camped overnight next to the Senqu Stream (source of the Orange river) and then headed to Mnweni pass the next morning. The walk down the pass is very steep and slow going so you need to allow 2 to 3 hours to cover the 2km distance and 800m drop down to the bottom (Chi Chi bushcamp). From here the path back down next to the Mnweni River is 16km to a concrete bridge and nearest road where we had arranged a lift back in bakkie to cover the last 5km to the Mnweni Cultural Centre. The walk took a solid 9 hours to complete 18km. This is a very tough hike to do over 2 days and recommend you do it over 3 days to allow more time to enjoy the breath taking scenery on top of Mnweni.
This epic adventure was undertaken by Jarvis Ball, Warren & Donovan Rocchi and Haig Biddulph. Transportation courtesy of the slug!
The 3 day Mnweni Circuit hike in the Drakensberg is regarded as one of the top hikes to do in South Africa in terms of scenery . So basically the hike is a circular hike covering about 43km over 3 days/2 nights. Day one was awesome and fairly flat , we stopped by the pools for a swim . The second day will see an ascent up Mnweni Pass. The altitude gain is about 1200m with the majority of the gain in the last 3km. We top out at 3000m and is known as the Drakensberg escarpment The third day is long. We cover 17km and descend via Rockeries Pass. Again, the worst part of the descent is covered in he first 5km. In fact, we drop about 800m over the 4km.
My friend Mike and I did a fast packing mission up Mnweni Pass which started at the Mnweni Cultural and Hiking Centre! We slept the night in Ledges Cave and then returned to our starting point the next day via Rockeries Pass! We did some night time navigation and we had to deal with some pretty strong winds on the first day! Track: Dead Tomorrow by Solence
Hike from Mnweni visitor centre up Mnweni pass to Ledgers cave. Down Rockeries pass back to the visitor centre. Mission Maximum Adventure Consultants.
we recently had a hike in the Drakensberg mountains, our mission was to do a 5 day hike, ascending Fangs pass and hike all the way around to and down the Rockeries pass. unfortunately we fell behind schedule and could not manage to ascend the mighty fangs pass, so I am yet to go back there and slay the dragon But in the end we still had a great 4 days in the Drakensberg and managed to get some really amazing photos in the process. Through all of this I managed to thoroughly test out the new version of the Baltoro 75 backpack - this is in my opinion the Rambo off all backpacks and it is super comfortable even with a heavy load. The quality is out of this world and being part of the Gregory family is just something special! be sure to check them out if you are in the market to invest in a proper pack! As for the Photo tours, if anyone is keen and wants some more information feel free to send me a mail ivan🤍i-livewild.com

Experience Wild Africa ventured into the Drakensberg - this time we went hiking! This is yet another fantastic way to experience Africa. It is slow, deliberate, and tiring, BUT once the bug has bitten, it is hard to let go ;-) We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Mahai Campsite, Royal Natal Giants Castle Game Reserve. We experienced a fantastic 3 days in the reserve, with plenty of magnificent views, rain, thunder, sunshine, waterfalls, mountains, and a lot of like minded souls. Please enjoy our first Hiking video. There will be more to come.

4 Day Mnweni Circuit Hike in the the Northern Drakensberg.
Mnweni is arguably the most scenic and dramatic area in the Ukahlamba-Drakensberg stretching from the Royal Natal National Park in the north-east to the Cathedral Peak area in the south-west.
