Is there any? Upon an initial reading, both philosophies may sound similar since both have to do with a lack of meaning and purpose in the world. But, there are some considerable and essential differences, which I’ll cover in this short video. First, I’ll go over what existential nihilism associated with the philosophy of Fredrick Neitzche is and what Absurdism associated with the philosopher Albert Camus is. Then, I’ll compare and contrast them so you can see the differences. What is the difference between Nihilism vs. Existentialism vs. Absurdism? The common ground they share is that they are all responses to philosophy’s timeless clichéd question “what is the meaning of life?” Nihilism came into full bloom in the 19th century as the full implications of modernism came to fruition. Existentialism and Absurdism are two ways of responding to the crisis of Nihilism. So what is Nihilism? It’s the belief that there is no objective meaning, no purpose outside the illusions humanity has created for itself. As science developed and the religious narratives were found to be ineffective and hollow, the religious account of reality was consigned to the trash heap of history but with it went the grounding of our morality and meaning. This is what Nietzsche’s madman is decrying in The Gay Science when he proclaims that God is Dead. Among the ways of facing this crisis, Existentialism vs Absurdism are two promising alternatives. Existentialism says there is no objective/inherent value but there is a potential for a created value. For Jean-Paul Sartre Existentialism is the realisation that existence precedes essence which means that humans have a radical freedom to create our own meaning through how we live our lives, through the acts of our will. The Absurd was first talked about by Kierkegaard but was fully developed by Albert Camus into the philosophy of Absurdism in his book The Myth of Sisyphus. The Absurd is the collision between the inherent human hunger for meaning and the impossibility of satisfying this drive in a meaningless world. Camus says we have three options in facing the Absurd: commit suicide, take a leap of faith and believe in some meaning (like Christianity, Buddhism, Marxism, existentialism) something Camus calls philosophical suicide. The third option is Absurdism. Absurdism is the rebellion against the Absurd. It is to refuse to give in and create a meaning. For Camus Absurdism means holding the space of the absurd, staring into its face and rebelling against it and out of this rebellion flows our freedom and passion. _ ⭐ Support the channel (thank you!) ▶ Patreon: patreon.com/thelivingphilosophy ▶ Ko-fi: ko-fi.com/thelivingphilosophy _ 📚 Further Reading: Primary: Camus, A., 2013. H.P. Lovecraft was an American writer who is known for his creation of what became the Cthulhu Mythos and the creator of the literary philosophy known as Cosmicism, emphasising the Cosmic Horror of the unknown and the insignificance of human beings in the vast realms of space and time. This video explores the peculiar philosophy of Cosmicism and its similarities with Absurdism, existentialism, and nihilism, three movements that arose from the human experience of anguish and confusion stemming from the Absurd, ultimately diverging to different perspectives on life. “Katie, you constantly preach absurdism, but how does that really differ from existentialism?” It really comes down to how we decide to resolve the inherent meaninglessness of existence. Whether we choose to create meaning, or embrace the meaninglessness and live in spite of it. But whatever you do, please don’t be a sad nihilist. Nietzsche would be so disappointed in you. It’s meant as a transitional thing, not a permanent thing - I’m sure you’re getting tired of me saying it by now. I did a video on it, if you haven’t seen it. Anyways, let’s use an example to help us illustrate the absurdity in action. When we think of Sisyphus pushing that boulder up for eternity, the task should be thought of as an analogy for our individual existence, not as an analogy of a particular component or situation in your life. I’ve made this mistake before. Existence is the part of our life where the only way out is through death. However, this doesn’t mean that we are meant to or should suffer through or accept that which we can change. There’s a difference between these two things. It’s like the idea of how it’s up to you how you react to others. You can control how you react or interact with the information, but you cannot change it. Similarly, I cannot change the trauma of my past, but I can choose to not let it define me, to be a survivor rather than a victim, and keep going. Do not conflate this with the things which you can change though, eg. it may be incredibly difficult, but you can find your way out of a bad relationship, or you can work to improve your circumstances. These are not the types of things which we should be smiling through. These are all things which we have the capacity to change, no matter how daunting the task may appear to be. This is just how I interpret it and apply it to my existence. Some absurdists outright reject free will, but I’m not getting into that today. The important part is living defiantly and authentically in spite of the psychological tension from the absurd. Can I go over Existentialism vs Absurdism? A viewer on this channel asked an interesting question: What’s the difference between the philosophy of Absurdism and the philosophy of Existentialism? So, I’ll answer that question in this video, as there are certainly some differences. Just to clarify, this person was referring to the philosophy of Existentialism associated with 20th-century European philosophers—particularly John Paul Sartre, who popularized the term. Some scholars extend the term back to Sorin Kierkegaard, and others extend it as far back as Socrates. In this video, I’ll explain the difference between the Absurdism of Albert Camus and the Existentialism of John Paul Sartre. Let’s dive in. #existentialism #absurdism Subscribe for more videos like this on YouTube and turn on the notification bell to get more videos: 🤍 Because the notification bell only sends to a small percentage due to algorithm changes, get notified about new videos and bonus extras here via email: 🤍
Dive into Albert Camus’ philosophy of the absurd, and explore the question: if the world is meaningless, could our lives still hold value? Albert Camus grew up surrounded by violence. His homeland of Algeria was mired in conflict. He lost his father in World War I. Seeing World War II's devastation, Camus grew despondent. What was the meaning behind all this endless bloodshed and suffering? And if the world was meaningless, could our individual lives still hold value? Nihilism, Existentialism, and Absurdism are three philosophies that are often confused with each other. Nihilism is defined as the belief that nothing can be known or real. Existentialism is based on the belief that there is no meaning to life and therefore the only thing that matters is one’s own existence. Absurdism is a philosophy that argues that nothing makes sense in this world and therefore we should not strive to understand it. The Complete Guide to Nihilism, Existentialism, and Absurdism provides an overview of these philosophies and their implications for the modern world.

In this video we will be talking about 7 Life Lessons From Albert Camus. Albert Camus is one of the most representative figures of the philosophy of the “absurd” or “absurdism,” and his philosophy has inspired a lot of people in dealing with the absurdity of life. So with that in mind, here are 7 important lessons that we can learn from Albert Camus - 01. Create your own meaning for life 02. Don’t make happiness a distant goal 03. Don’t be ignorant 04. Be a rebel 05. Spend time with yourself 06. Be flexible 07. Choose Love I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope these 7 Life Lessons From Albert Camus will add value to your life. Albert Camus is one of the greatest French writers and thinkers. He was a philosopher, an author and a journalist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 and his most famous works are The Stranger, The Plague, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Fall, and The Rebel. Camus is one of the most representative figures of the philosophy of the “absurd” or “absurdism,” which is a philosophical movement having as its central hypothesis that human beings exist in a purposeless, chaotic universe. Camus considered that absolute freedom must be balanced with absolute justice - too much freedom leads to the situation when the strong suppresses the weak but too much justice kills freedom, and we need to live and let live. As a promoter of the philosophy of the “absurd”, Camus believed that life has no meaning, that the universe simply exists and that it is indifferent to people’s lives. We are like Sisyphus from Greek mythology, forever carrying that heavy rock to the top of the hill, although we know the rock will always fall down and our life's work is meaningless. Our condition might be tragic, but Camus considered that this exact condition hides a blessing in disguise: life does not have a meaning, but we are free to attribute it any meaning we want. His philosophy has inspired a lot of people in dealing with the absurdity of life and even today, his philosophy is extremely relevant.
