Because the ankle joint is constantly working (whether walking, running, or standing, etc) the calves are typically under constant work. I see this calf tightness and these calf injuries most often in runners and the running population, but none of us are completely immune from it. The biggest problems with calf tightness is that it puts you at higher risk for a calf strain or injury, causes increased pull on your Achilles tendon (predisposing you for Achilles tendonitis), and also puts more stress on your plantar fascia (which can cause foot pain). The best thing you can do for your tight calves is get on a regular schedule of stretching and other exercises that will ultimately help you alleviate this tension. The exercise demonstrated in this video are just the answers you're looking for. The thing that I've found in working with hundreds of patients and clients who suffer from this problem is that not everyone knows how to stretch their calves out. This has to be done the right way in order to maximize your outcomes and results. Did you know your "calf" is actually made up of two muscles? One sits right on top of the other and they both perform a similar function (plantar flexion at the ankle - like stepping on the gas). However they're very different anatomically and need to be stretched as such. The GASTROCNEMIUS muscle is the more superficial (sits on top) of the two muscles. It actually crosses the knee joint and attaches up to the bottom of the femur and then inserts into the top part of your heel. This muscle is stretched with our knee extended as we pull our toes towards our shins. The SOLEUS muscle sits underneath the gastrocnemius and up against the tibia. It attaches below the knee joint into the tibia and inserts into the top of our heel. You can actually best stretch the soleus by "unlocking" your gastrocnemius and bending your knee slightly. With your knee slightly bent you then pull your toes towards your shin until a stretch is felt in the back of your leg. LIST OF STRETCHES DEMONSTRATED IN THIS VIDEO 1. FOAM ROLLER: great way to release the tightness and fascia that surround the calf muscles preparatory to stretching them out. 2. SEATED CALF STRETCH: bonus for those of you who also have tight hamstrings. 3. STANDING GASTROCNEMIUS STRETCH: push on the wall with your knee locked out to feel a stretch back behind your knee. 4. STANDING SOLEUS STRETCH: unlock the knee slightly to feel a much deeper stretch a lot lower towards your heel. 5. STANDING STAIR STRETCH (GASTROC): stand on the edge of a stair so your ankles fall below your toes. 6. STANDING STAIR STRETCH (SOLEUS): unlock your knee slightly to feel a comfortable stretch in your Achilles area. Calves and knee stability are essential for proper function of the hips, knees and lower back. Most commonly, problems start before you can feel it, by tight calves or stiff ankles. In this week's video, Chris Jensen explains an easy way to address this, by improving your ankle flexibility and calf length at the same time. By having more flexible calves, that's less resistance for the muscles to work, therefore reducing chances of shin splints. With proper functioning of the knee, that means less transference of force up into the leg, back pain in the back and work more efficiently reducing any chance of injury. Here is a quick calf stretch that can reduce tension within the calves themselves and reduce symptoms such as shin splints, neck pain or lower back pain. Place a small hand towel underneath the ball of your foot. This will add tension to the area of your Achilles tendon. Extend back leg as straight as comfortable and hold for 20 to 30 seconds. Slightly drop your knee towards the floor to add extra tension. Hold this stretch for 20 to 30 seconds as well to ensure that the strongest muscle group can fully benefit from the exercise.

CHECK OUT THE NEW VERSION: 🤍 The calf muscles consist of two muscles: the gastrocnemius and the soleus. The gastrocnemius is the larger muscle that is visible on the back of the leg, and the soleus is the smaller muscle that is lower down on the back of the leg and mostly underneath the gastrocnemius. Both muscles end up attaching to the heel via the achilles tendon and serve to point the toes down (plantarflexion). These muscles are vital in walking, running, and propelling the body. Strains in the calf come in varying degrees: Grade 1 Slight pain in the back of the leg Zero to very slight restricted motion or activity Tightness, aching, and slight pain for up to 5 days Grade 2 Pronounced, sharp, and restrictive pain Swelling and bruising Tightness and aching for up to 10 days Grade 3 Severe pain that is fully restrictive Moderate to complete inability to restrict the muscles Significant bruising and swelling In the most severe cases (ruptures) the muscle is bunched up towards the top of the calf Calf strains occur due to injury during acceleration, change of direction, or repeated flexion under duress. The muscles may initially begin to spasm, cramp, or swell. Bruising may also become apparent at some time after the initial injury. Treatment of a grade II calf strain involves rest most importantly. Ice, elevation, and compression are necessary to reduce pain and inflammation, and should absolutely not be relied upon to continue strenuous activity. Grade II calf strains can become very serious if this rest is not afforded to the muscles. KT Tape provides excellent support for these muscles during unavoidable activity, reducing aching and tightness in the calf. This application also provides inhibition of the muscles to promote relaxation and healing.
