【 Hong Kong Police Force • Annual Review 2022 】 In 2022, the Hong Kong Police Force performed various feats of safeguarding the city during landmark events, including those marking the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland. Aiming to ‘Bring Prosperity Through Security’, we continued to bring citizens together to uphold national security and extinguish terrorism. Meanwhile, the overall law and order situation in Hong Kong remained stable. Never resting on our laurels, we continued to combat a gamut of crimes through the year, by introducing new initiatives to curb ever-evolving scams and nip juvenile delinquency in the bud. The year also saw our endeavours to tell stories conveying the spirit of commendable police officers, encourage police-public collaborations to fortify community policing to prevent and fight crime with citizens and proactively recruit new blood into the law enforcement agency. As devoted as ever to safeguarding Hong Kong on all fronts, we also accomplished a military-grade bomb disposal operation to neutralise the threat posed by a moored naval mine from World War II, raised road safety awareness and kept doing our part in the battle against the COVID-19 epidemic, to reach our overarching objective — ensuring everyone in Hong Kong live in safety and prosperity.

A Hong Kong police officer was beaten by demonstrators and fell to the floor before being helped by fellow officers at Hong Kong airport, Tuesday, August 13. The officer in question pulled out a gun during the skirmish and pointed it at the protesters but no shots were fired. All departing flights from Hong Kong's international airport have been cancelled for a second straight day Tuesday, August 13, after pro-democracy demonstrators once again took over the facility's main terminal. The decision by the airport authority came just minutes after it suspended all passenger check-in services after protesters blocked passengers from entering their departure gates, and advised the general public not to come to the airport. 🤍

Hong Kong police arrested a man on a London-bound flight early Thursday on suspicion of having stabbed a police officer in the arm during the July 1 protests. The 24-year-old man, with the last name of Wong, was arrested on a Cathay Pacific flight after police received an anonymous tip-off about his travel plans, police said. Wong had purchased a ticket on Wednesday and boarded the flight with no check-in luggage, police said. He did not respond to the crew when they called him by name, and was not in his designated seat. Police identified him after conducting a sweep of the plane. Hong Kong broadcaster TVB has shown video of an incident during Wednesday protests in Hong Kong, where police say one of their officers was stabbed. The video shows a high shot, looking down on crowds, with police officers moving in to make arrests. As one police officer tangles with people in crowd, one man appears to raise an object and attack the officer with it. TVB video also shows a police officer bleeding, and taken away for treatment. Hong Kong police also put out still photos showing an officer with his uniform soaked in blood around his left shoulder. (13 Jun 1997) English/Nat Hong Kong police have been demonstrating the muscle power of its Police Tactical Unit (P-T-U). The unit is used to control demonstrations, disperse crowds and disarm violent criminals. With the handover of the British colony to China just two weeks away, senior Hong Kong officers are preparing for every situation. This is the situation Hong Kong's police officers hope they won't have to deal with during the period of the handover. An angry and excited mob, ready to fight, and not worried about the consequences. But this is a training exercise, teaching police officers how to control demonstrators and disarm them peacefully. The Police Tactical Unit can be called on to deal with anything from riots to crowd control. In the past they've quelled violent disturbances at the Vietnamese detention camps and riots by taxi drivers - 13 years ago - following a dispute over licence fees. P-T-U Senior Superintendent Blake Hancock isn't expecting violence on the streets during the hand over, but it will be a testing time for his men. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The handover is going to require a great deal of policing in Hong Kong because of all the celebrations going on, all the events going on. There's a lot of public order functions including fireworks displays on the eve of the handover and again on the first of July. You appreciate as well there are a number of very high level handover ceremonies with high ranking guests from the U-K and China and many other foreign countries, so there are plans in place to provide a high level of policing throughout that period." SUPER CAPTION: Senior Superintendent Blake Hancock, Hong Kong Police The P-T-U trains around 2-thousand officers a year. They have to undergo rigorous firearms and fitness training including an army style assault course. Using techniques adopted from American police, officers are trained how to use pressure points to make the most reluctant 'sit-in' protester move. This Robocop-style 'red man suit' gives virtually total protection to officers under very hostile attack, although in Hong Kong it is only used in training exercises. If events get really violent officers can be moved around in British made armoured personnel carriers. Able to withstand the bullet from an AK-47 automatic weapon, the vehicle can also be electrified to prevent protesters climbing on board. The P-T-U also has access to an impressive range of firepower to deal with the worst disturbances from C-S gas to smoke grenades.
