NVIDIA RTX 4090 PCIe 3.0 vs. 4.0 x16 & '5.0' Scaling Benchmarks

Sponsor: Montech Sky One Lite on Amazon 🤍 This testing is for PCIe generations on the NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU. We're benchmarking PCIe 3.0 x16 vs. PCIe 4.0 x16 vs. PCIe "5.0" x16 (but the 4090 doesn't support 5.0, so it's just 4.0 still worth showing for educational purposes). Remember that PCIe 3.0 x16 is equal to PCIe 4.0 x8, so if you're wondering if the RTX 4090 behaves differently on PCIe 4.0 x8 vs. x16, these two tests would answer that. We're doing testing on an Intel i7-12700KF, which is Gen5-ready but again, if the device isn't Gen5, that doesn't matter. If you're wondering about AMD vs. Intel for the RTX 4090, strictly from a PCIe standpoint, it doesn't matter at this point they're the same in that regard. Other factors are more important, like CPU performance in the applications you run (see our CPU reviews for that). One correction of an off-hand remark at 4 minutes 25 seconds - the RX 6500 XT has 4 PCIe lanes (Gen4), not 8. We forgot how much of a piece of trash that card was, sorry. Our mistake for not double-checking. The latest generation of both AMD and Nvidia GPU’s didn’t disappoint in terms of performance. They did in terms of availability, pricing, and of course issues due to the shortages and miners, but performance wise, it was great. We got amazing leaps from both. AMD’s is finally competing in the higher end, and the architectures have changed radically. But one other thing also took a pretty big leap, And that’s power consumption. AMD’s top card is at 320w and Nvidia’s at 350w. That’s bone stock. If we look at specific manufacturers, you got someone like EVGA who has an unlocked bios that allows the card to go up to 450w. And it does so without any problems. It doesn’t stop there though. The rumored RTX 3090 ti that would launch in january next year would have a stock TDP of 450w. At this point to exceed that, we’re going to need 4 8 pin connectors... on a single GPU? That’s ridiculous. So how much higher can we go ? Well… Higher. Igor wallosek recently managed to get some schematics for the next generation of power connectors. In the last video, we talked about PCIE gen 5 and how there was a new standard for a connector related to power. And this is it, the PCI-SIG 12VHPWR H+. This is a 12+4 pin connector that would come to all new gpu’s in 2022. As you can see, there’s 12 pins at the top that are slightly smaller than those found in current 6 and 8 pins. These are all for power and ground, and there are an additional 4 pins under there for signaling. According to Igor, this single cable would be enough to power that 450w rtx 3090 ti. And there would be room for more. With 9.5 Amps per 12v pins, we’re looking at up to 684W although the official spec states 600w total. ———————————————— ———————————————— About Boot Sequence: Snows and the rest of the Boot Sequence team are here to bring you the latest breaking Tech News. Corsair is teasing performance metrics of its first PCIe 5.0 SSD, the Corsair MP700 The Corsair MP700 Gen 5 PCIe x4 NVMe 2.0 M.2 SSD features impressive 10,000 MB/s sequential read speeds and 9,500 MB/s sequential write speeds. The company touts the drive as ready for AM5, but that doesn't stop Intel Alder Lake (and upcoming Raptor Lake) users from benefitting as well. The MP700 is 40% faster than Corsair's fastest PCIe Gen 4 drive, the MP600 Pro XT, in both sequential read and write speeds. This can be attributed to PCIe 5.0's higher bandwidth — in the M.2 form factor, PCIe 5.0 allows for a maximum of 15.8 GB/s. The NVIDIA RTX 3080 GPU uses PCIe Gen4, and so we have another opportunity to benchmark PCIe 3.0 vs. 4.0, using an AMD X570 platform for benchmarks as to whether PCIe gen matters. Sponsor: EK 240 AIO D-RGB on Amazon (🤍 CORRECTION: Slide at 05:10 for Quake II RTX should read "R9 3900XT and X570 Crosshair VIII Hero," not 10700K. Sorry about that copy/paste error. PCIe generation testing has always been a hot topic for GPU launches, but this time, it's about PCIe 3 vs. 4. We've most commonly talked about PCIe 3.0 x16 vs. PCIe 3.0 x8, and as Ryzen has matured, that has presented opportunities for Gen4 testing except only the 5700XT could leverage it, and so it didn't particularly matter. That's not to say the 5700 XT wasn't good, but just that it was unable to leverage the additional bandwidth in any meaningful way. Our previous testing with Titan RTX cards also showed limited gains, and so we're revisiting this storyline today with our NVIDIA RTX 3080 GPU (the Gigabyte Eagle also makes a brief feature). This tests PCIe generational bandwidth for gaming and for workstation workloads. Forspoken is the first game to support DirectStorage on PC. DirectStorage has been covered and tested on this channel on numerous occasions through tech demos, but today will be the first time testing it in an actual game. The game is installed on the fastest SSD currently available - the Phison E26 Gen5 engineering sample. This SSD was sent to me by Phison, and I benchmarked it in a previous video. While very fast, it uses 1600 MT/s 232L NAND from Micron. This NAND supports up to 2400 MT/s, so faster Gen5 SSD are on the way this year, which will be even faster. The game is running in 4K with ultra settings. For those wondering about Gen5 SSD thermals, I am using the reference design heatsink with active cooling, and the SSD's max temperature during a 1 hour gaming session in Forspoken was 57 degrees. In the next video, I will be comparing three generation of SSDs in this game - Gen5 vs Gen4 vs Gen3. Get subscribed so you don't miss it!

If you’re confused about the benefits PCIe 4.0 components offer over alternatives, we have the details you need! PCIe Gen 4 is the market standard interface for connecting high-speed components to motherboards, from SSDs to CPUs, GPUs, and beyond. PCIe 4.0 doubles the data rate of its predecessor, PCIe 3.0. It runs more efficiently too, consuming less power. This means that it produces less heat. Performance for modular items like SSDs and graphics cards greatly benefits from upgrading to 4.0. PCIe Gen 4 devices only achieve their potential in circumstances where the CPU and motherboard are compatible with the protocol. While initially only a handful of AMD motherboards were able to support PCIe Gen 4, these days there are many varieties of Intel and AMD motherboards that are compatible, as well as a range of CPUs. People will sometimes conflate PCIe and NVMe. It is important to understand that NVMe is a protocol for SSDs, not an interface like PCIe. PCIe NVMe SSDs are far faster than SATA SSDs, but it should be noted that many recent PCIe NVMe SSDs were themselves having their top performance inhibited by the limitations of PCIe Gen 3. Gen 4 has resolved this bottleneck, meaning that PCIe NVMe SSDs are extremely fast compared to the last generation of SSDs. The majority of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs on the market are in M.2 form factor, though others are available if required. PCIe Gen 5 is already being rolled out, with Intel Gen 5 CPUs already available. However, these are not yet fully compatible with products on the market at present. Technology marches on, but for now, PCIe 4.0 offers the best performance possible for personal computers. The PCIe 4.0 standard was announced in 2017. However, we are just now seeing SSDs and Graphics Cards using this new tech for the first time at Computex 2019. If you are looking for the latest and greatest in PC tech, this video is for you. What is PCIe Gen4? PCIe Gen4 will have double the bandwidth and lanes when compared to Gen 3, making it twice as fast as the older spec. PCIe slots can be configured with one lane or multiples of four lanes, such as x1, x4, x8, x16, x32 and each new generation doubles the bandwidth of the previous one. For instance, a PCIe 3.0 x8 interface can be replaced by a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface that provides the same amount of bandwidth for add-in hardware like graphics cards, SSDs, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet cards. How do you get PCIe Gen4? These new standards require support from a CPU and motherboard. Currently the only CPUs that support PCI Gen 4 are the AMD’s Ryzen Gen 3 and EPYC. This has any PC builders excited and had helped AMD garner a lot of attention at Computex 2019. So, only the latest desktops, notebooks, and servers from AMD will support it. Originally AMD tried to support the new standard on some older motherboards but that proved to be too difficult. Currently the new spec is only supported on X570 and newer motherboards. Check with your motherboard manufacturer to make sure it’s capable. Should you upgrade to PCIe Gen4? This is always the hardest question to answer because everyone is in a different place with their hardware and OS combinations. If you’re already in the market for a new system, then it’s always a good idea to future proof and look for Gen4 capable hardware. The tech is backward compatible so you can still use all the hardware that supports the old standard. But if you’ve updated in the last year or two (2018-2019) and still have a high-functioning system, you can probably wait. Some components have more performance to gain from this update than others such as SSDs, GPUs, and Wi-Fi. But if those components are already operating at max capacity with PCIe 3.0, then an update probably isn’t going to give you the immediate performance boost. Even AMDs latest gaming graphics cards are based on PCIe Gen3, since it has enough throughput to maximize the experience. The last thing you should know is that Gen 4 does pull more power, and therefore heat. You might need to consider airflow and cooling options for your build. What about PCIe Gen5? PCIe Gen 4 is great, but Gen 5 is not that far away. Within the next two to five years (2021-2024), PCIe 5 will be a thing. The truth is PCIe 4 took a long time to come to market and the standards for Gen 5 are almost a reality. The standards board that sets the specs is closing in on a finalized version of Gen at the time we are producing this video. But like with all new hardware standards it’s going to take some time before you see companies producing hardware with the new speeds. And of course, as always, you know when the time comes, we got your back. So, what is it about PCIe 4.0 that has you most excited? Are you going to incorporate this shiny new tech into your rig or hold off? Let us know in the comments.
