Artist - Manish Vyas and Bikramjit Singh Raga Yaman is a night raga which is very romantic in nature. This raga is often taught to beginners in Hindustani music. Some say its origin is from the Persian mode "Ei'man" from which "Yaman" originated. Others say it has Vedic origins as Raga Yamuna which over time altered as Yaman. This raga is also called Kalyan or Yaman-Kalyan. The raga has all shuddha swars except for the tivra Ma. It is this note which gives the raga its distinctive quality of peace, and tranquility. Some modernists consider Yaman, Yaman-Kalyan, and Kalyan to be one raga and only traditionalists consider these as three distinct ragas. #darbarfestival #Bhimpalasi #Kaushiki Kaushiki Chakraborty sings the romantic afternoon Raag Bhimpalasi, showcasing the ornaments and rapid-fire melodies of her Patiala khayal gharana. Learn more about the music: Kaushiki’s virtuoso technique is the result of years of intense training, primarily from her esteemed father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. She hails from the Patiala gharana, known for a strong Islamic influence and elaborate ornamentation when singing taan [fast improvised melodies]. She describes her approach: “It’s all in the mind. One has to mentally align oneself to the form...My training has taught me two approaches to music – to do music and or to become it. The latter gives you the fluidity to transcend form and become one with it.” Milind Kulkarni, also featured, is a modern exponent of Hindustani classical harmonium. Starting at the age of seven, he learned fast under the tutelage of successive gurus - Vasantrao Gurav, Anna Diwan, and Pramod Marathe. He still studies under the latter, and also receives accompaniment instruction from leading non-harmonium artists too, including vocalist Ulhas Kashalkar and tabla maestro Suresh Talwalkar. Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raga, said to evoke sringara [attraction, romantic love]. It uses the notes of Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPnS and an avroh [descent] of SnDPmgRS. Characteristically, Dha and Re only appear in the descending line, and are approached from the notes above. Ma is the vadi [king note]. The raga uses the notes of the Western Dorian mode, and the closest Carnatic raga is Abheri. Late Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi was an Indian vocalist from Karnataka in the Hindustani classical tradition. He is known for the khayal form of singing, as well as for his popular renditions of devotional music. Raag Bhairav is a Hindustani Classical heptatonic (Sampurna) Raga of Bhairav Thaat. Traditionally it is a morning raga. Bhairav is considered to be the most ancient fundamental Raag of Hindustani Classical Music. Also, it is believed that Bhairav was the very first Raag to be created by Lord Shiva. This raga is being used in worship by Hindus in their religious imagination of “Lord Shiva and Parvati”. Bhimsen Joshi was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1998, the highest honour conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama. Subsequently, he received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 2009. He made a career in Hindustani classical music, devotional music, patriotic music and playback singing. Bhimsen Joshi was known for his powerful voice, amazing breath control, fine musical sensibility and unwavering grasp of the fundamentals. He died in 2011, aged 88, in Pune, Maharashtra. Joshi first performed live in 1941 at the age 19. His debut album, containing a few devotional songs in Marathi and Hindi, was released in 1942. A large part of Indian classical music involves improvisation by exploring the raag, or melodic scale. Here we present Maa Anugraha, one of Isha Samskriti's senior Hindustani music students, exploring raag Yaman through an improvisation technique known as "taan." Taan is the weaving of notes together in a fast tempo. This is done completely on the spot, and is not pre-composed. Raag Yaman is traditionally sung in the early evenings, and conveys a mood that is calm and peaceful, while at the same time full of life.

#darbarfestival #sitar #tabla #niladri Sitarist Niladri Kumar plays Mishra Bhairavi, named for the goddess of destruction, replete with chromaticism, double-stops, and extraordinary string bends. Learn more about the music Niladri Kumar is known for his expansive modern sitar style, stretching the boundaries of classical music. Trained under his father, a disciple of Ravi Shankar, he was recognised as a prodigy. He has since developed an extraordinary technical command of his instrument, complete with dextrous double stops, whispering string bends, and rapid taans [fast improvised lines]. He makes forays into film composition and is the inventor of the ‘zitar’ - a curious hybrid of electric guitar and sitar. Today he tours extensively with Zakir Hussain’s groups as well as a solo artist. “In Harry Potter, there’s a wand choosing scene where the wand and its user need to have a connect. The sitar too broadly works in a similar style. Only after the instrument and the artiste warm up to each other, the musical spark begins and the magic starts to flow.” (Niladri Kumar) Bhairavi is often described as the ‘queen of rāgas’. It takes its name from the Hindu goddess of destruction, and conjures versatile moods. To some it can evoke ‘awe, terror, and chaos’; to others ‘a pleasant sobering atmosphere of love and piety’. It is played at sunrise, or alternatively as the final piece in a concert. Understanding the raga in depth is crucial to Hindustani learning - bansuri master Rupak Kulkarni recounts the approach of his guru Hariprasad Chaurasia: “Guruji taught me Raag Bhairavi for five years. When I complained about the repetition, he said: ‘You have to practice Bhairavi until your last breath’. That is what made me realize what swarabhyas [the study of notes] means”. It is based on the form SrgmPdnS - all swaras [notes] are komal [flattened] except Sa, Ma, and Pa, like the Western Phrygian scale or Carnatic Raga Hanumatodi. The vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes] are typically taken to be Ma and Sa. The raga commonly takes a versatile mishra (‘mixed’) form - all 12 notes are allowed, thus injecting some comparatively rare chromaticism into Hindustani music. Its flexibility is unmatched in the raga pantheon. #darbarfestival Ustad Shahid Parvez showcases some fascinating rhythmic-melodic interplay (‘layakari’), stretching and compressing Yaman’s melodies over the 16-beat tintal cycle. Learn more about the music: Musically, Shahid Parvez Khan does not compromise. He is totally dedicated to the sitar, upholding the illustrious traditions of his ancestors while expanding the instrument’s technical boundaries. Critics back in India have described him as ‘Indian music personified’. Born into the legendary Imdadkhani gharana of Uttar Pradesh, he was always expected to carry the family legacy forward. His ancestors gave shape to the modern sitar, redesigning it and formulating the now-distinctive gayaki ang [singing style]. The Khan family includes pioneers such as his uncle Vilayat and his grandfather Imdad, who in 1904 became the first recorded sitarist. His early training was famously demanding. He had to practice for the majority of his waking life, rarely playing outside or socialising with his peers. His father Aziz did not believe in praise, and avoided smiling at his son’s accomplishments despite widespread acclaim as a prodigy. For many the extreme discipline may have poisoned the music, but not for Shahid, who says “my involvement in music is so much that I do not think of anything else...I do not believe I can live a better life.” Today he sits at the pinnacle of Hindustani music, touring widely while also finding time to teach at his eponymous SPK Academy in Arizona (“I do not teach for money - it is my passion”). Ojas Adhiya combines extraordinary technical aptitude with a vast knowledge base, playing with a fluency that belies his years. Born in a small Maharashtra village, he was drawn to the tabla from infancy, experimenting with the instrument at the age of two. He taught himself keherwa taal soon afterwards, shocking his father when he first overheard him. Here they play a madhya laya gat in Teental [medium tempo 16-beats] in Raag Yaman. Bazm e Khas presents Raag Gaud Sarang played by Arnab Chakroborty on sarod accompanied by Zuhaib Ahmed on tabla. Credits: Sarod : Arnab Chakroborty Tabla: Zuhaib Ahmed About Artist: Arnab Chakrabarty is a Hindustani Classical Musician and a fantastic Sarod player. His tutelage commenced under the Sarod exponent Brij Narayan of the Seniya Maihar Gharana. He subsequently trained under Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta of the Shahjahanpur Gharana. Arnab's early training followed the Maihar and Shahjahanpur schools, which both derived from the Senia idiom founded by the legendary Miyan Tansen. However, he has long been influenced by the vocalism-inspired style of the Etawah Gharana. Arnab has had several significant concerts. He made his solo debut in 1994 and won the National Collegiate Competition for Music and Dance three years in a row between 1995 and 1997. In 1999 he performed before Dr Kofi Annan, then the United Nations Secretary-General, a memorial programme for the Pakistani peace activist Eqbal Ahmed. About Raag Gaud Sarang: Raag Gaud Sarang is a popular and beautiful raga in Indian classical music. It is a member of the Sarang family of ragas and is often performed in the evening or late night. The raga is characterized by a deep and soulful mood and is known for its use of long and sustained notes. It is often played with a slow and steady tempo, allowing the notes to resonate and create a meditative atmosphere. The notes of Raag Gaud Sarang are derived from the Kalyan thaat and typically include the following: Sa, Re, Ma, Pa, and Dha. In some variations of the raga, the Ga and Ni notes may also be included. One of the distinctive features of Raag Gaud Sarang is the use of a microtonal interval, known as the Komal Gandhar. This note, which is lower than the standard Ga, is often played with a slight oscillation or vibrato, adding to the emotional intensity of the raga. Overall, Raag Gaud Sarang is a raga that is often chosen by musicians to express deep emotions and to create a contemplative and introspective mood. Its use of long, sustained notes and the inclusion of the Komal Gandhar make it a beautiful and memorable raga that is loved by many fans of Indian classical music. Raga Lalit also called Lalat is amongst the older and more popular ragas of the Hindustani system. Lalit is a sweet and mellifluous raga in Hindustani classical music. It is commonly described as serene and devotional and is performed at dawn - between 4am and 6am. The raga Lalit belongs to Poorvi Thaat. Other well-known ragas from the Poorvi Thaat are Paraj, Poorvi, Puriya Dhanashree, Shree etc. So clearly there could be ragas from the same thaat but meant for different times of the day. While Paraj and Lalit are morning ragas, we find ragas like Poorvi and Shree which are sung at dusk, but from the same Poorvi Thaat. Lalit evokes the mood of prayer and a certain sense of calm.
