Realism and Liberalism are the two dominant theories that seek to explain global politics and international relations today. Realism argues that states are locked in a constant struggle for power to ensure security. Liberalism, on the other hand, looks at the interdependence of the global system, and promotes cooperation over competition. Thanks again to Miss E for helping out with this one! Thank you!
It's all about money. Liberal, realist it doesn't matter. Whichever path will fill the coffers of those in charge, that's what they will take.
I think in practise it doesn't have to be a choice between these options. You can embrace liberalism with like minded countries, while acting with realism in the more hostile regions of the world. And this appears to be exactly how the USA operates.
Useful information. Thank you.
A mix of both theories is the best.
You admit that the liberals have idealistic unattainable cooperation.
You pull out Afghanistan but leave out Sarajevo (Clinton). You say nothing of piece treaties Trump made. The liberals are trying to get a Marxist cult following now which you don’t address, they are lying about conservative Christians becoming nazis. The conservatives are exactly that; conservative in laws, movement for change, because every time you change something, you miss how it will be twisted or taken advantage of. The rich pass laws and get richer, the arming countries flips around and gets used to kill the unintended. Liberals like big government and control. The Handmaids tale is just that; a tail. Young people, do not be confused.

They wouldn't win any prizes for most impartial, objective (non-biased) presentation of the year! mm mh! Bottom of the class i'm afraid for these two skivers!
Idealism/liberalism is like to think most of your friends will definitely stand beside you when its against their own interests.
Well very nice to think that… but in reality?!!
You would be screwed and disappointed relying on that
Idealism/liberalism is like to think your first day in school, no one would ever try to bully you because its very unfair and against moral.
Well very nice to think that too… but in reality?!
You would rather expect and plan ahead.
Realism helps to be more practical, developed plan effectively, protected from manipulation and betrayal.
Realism is the future..
While in studies & in practice its been already there for many years, but its going to be internationally & explicitly used way more.
The world is in need for honesty, responsibility and practical solutions.
Idealistic old views like liberalism is good for raising kids and in movies and reading novel books, but on the ground is far less legit specially the last few decades, ironically instead it caused more wars, biases, distrust and hatred than cooperation.
Thank you, now I have a better understanding, thanks to you guys
(From Russia.) Fascinating conflict. ( If you pardon the pun). Just reading Keynes Biography (Carter) who was a economist -hehelped finance both WW1 and II. -But strongly believed in a utopian vision of Liberalism - 1919-1938 specifically. Now theres a paradox. But imagine if the world had listened to him!
Psychologically, people can be in fight/flight or their higher mind. I believe, since states are like people, that states can also be in either psychological state. If the state is in fight/flight then realism best applies, but if a state is in their higher mind, as long as the state's sims are altruistic, liberalism would best apply.
Liberalism never existed in the rest of the world outside the US
EU States act IN THEIR OWN INTEREST by letting the American taxpayer fund their security while they rebuilt and run their economies
France, Germany and the UK would NEVER come to agreement if they funded their own security cause they’d be scared of each other worst case or feel cheated in the best case
They are both right. The fundamental nature of the world is realist, but states can cooperate and form a liberal order. But that order will only function if all constituent parties feel their security concerns are met and power is shared in a fair and just manner to promote the well being of all within the order. If the cost of operating within that order exceeds its benefit, states can be expected to defect. The current international liberal order is threatened because Russia, along with many other states, feel their needs have not been met by the liberal order imposed and defended by the US.
Just as a note, I'll add that NGOs often operate on behalf of states clandestinely.
Proponents of a theory literally named it "Realism?"
That is pretty funny. Imagine if physicists did this?
Instead of the "inflationary cosmology" theory we'd have the "TRUE, CORRECT Cosmology (which you're WRONG if you disagree with!)"
Love from India
The idea that realism =\= cooperation is a gross misunderstanding of realism. Please take what these two say with a grain of salt, if at any.
